What’s the difference between hairs and grafts? | Miami Hair Transplant Q&A Series

Dr. Matt Huebner here from Natural Transplants continuing the Miami Hair Transplant Question and Answer series. In this Hair Transplant Blog post I’m going to outline the difference between hairs and grafts? A lot hair loss patients come to our clinic with misconceptions about grafts vs hairs when it comes to hair loss treatment and I want to clear up the confusion.

As you will quickly find out as you do your research, the entire hair transplant industry is fixated on the number of grafts per hair loss treatment session.  At most clinics, the hair transplant cost that a person will pay depends on the number of grafts, whether it be 1500 grafts, 2500 grafts, etc.  This concept of “number of grafts” is often viewed as a measure to compare pricing between hair loss treatment clinics. But unfortunately, when it comes to the final result and density, the number of grafts does not often correlate to results. The real question that matters is the number of HAIRS transplanted, not the number of grafts.

To clarify, a graft is a piece of tissue from the back of the head (donor region). It includes a small piece of skin, subcutaneous fat and any number of hair follicles. A graft could have a single hair in it (like the grafts that should be used in the frontal hairline or temple) or may contain multiple hair follicles (2-8 hairs).

Most hair loss treatment clinics charge their fee based on the number of grafts. Now here’s the problem with this – the hair loss treatment clinic is automatically incentivized to cut the donor strip into as many small grafts as possible to maximize their profits. When making the grafts, rather than leave a graft with 4 hairs, for example, they will instead divide that graft into 4 smaller single hair grafts. That 4 hair graft now has been transformed into 4 grafts, and the clinic can charge 4 times the money equating to a higher hair transplant cost. And what’s worse, the results are an overall decrease of density based on the fact that smaller grafts are used.

When comparing hair loss treatment clinics, the question that should be asked are 1) “How many hairs does that equate to?” and 2) “How many centimeters of donor tissue are being transplanted?” Those are the questions that level the playing field and keep things honest. At Natural Transplants we understand the value of keeping grafts with multiple hairs in order to create meaningful density and maximizing each session.
